History

W.I.R.E.S. was established in 1985 as a non-profit corporation for the purpose of having an independent organization own and manage local amateur radio repeaters, free from the influence or shifting change in politics of any clubs or organizations.  This has helped maintain the stability and dependability of the region’s most active and reliable repeater system.

W.I.R.E.S. is a
not-for-profit
501(c)(3)
organization.
Contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

WIRES is expanding to serve a much larger area.  We now have antennas in place at the 400-500 foot level on WLFI-TV's transmitter tower at Rossville.  By comparison, the 147.135+ repeater antenna in West Lafayette is at about 170 feet.

We will maintain the existing 147.135 MHz repeater at the WLFI studio tower in West Lafayette, and add new repeaters at Rossville.  Repeaters at the Rossville site will easily serve several counties in the region that currently have very limited repeater coverage.  This will enhance amateur radio activity in the surrounding area, as well as support communities that have no local repeater.  (Click on the images below to enlarge them.)

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to greatly enhance amateur radio communications in this region.  While equipment for most of this project has already been purchased, funds are needed to maintain and service the equipment.  In addition, repairs and upgrades are sorely needed for the 147.135+ repeater in West Lafayette.  We are asking the amateurs in the area who will directly benefit from this project, to help fund and support it.

Latest News

WIRES has been declared a non-profit, 501(c)(3) charitable organization by the IRS.  Contributions to WIRES are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

WIRES has received coordination for the 70cm repeater at the Rossville site!  The frequency is 443.500 MHz (+5 MHz offset, 88.5 Hz tone).  This repeater is now on the air!
The search still continues for a 2M repeater frequency. A very special "THANK YOU" to the Cass County Amateur Radio Club (www.w9vmw.org) for offering to give us their 2M repeater frequency!  Unfortunately, it cannot be used at Rossville, as it is too near another repeater on the same frequency.  Thanks again to the CCARC for their willingness to contribute to our project and help improve 2M amateur coverage in the area.
